AutoCAD Plant 3D is built tools to help you create iso drawings, reports including the Bill of Materials (BOM) and piping component file (PCF).

By the end of this chapter, you’ll be able to:

  • Configure style for piping isometric and spool drawing, and set content destination for each.

Once you built a 3D Model, you can generate the Orthographic views which can be automatically created from the model itself.

Orthographic drawings are DWG files, and each one can contain multiple orthographic views with data extracted from Plant 3D models.

Orthographic drawings display views of piping, valves, equipment, and structural steel in Plant 3D models. The drawings can have annotations, dimensions, matchlines, pipe gaps, and can show or hide lines and objects.

In this chapter you will do the followings:

  • Configure the default settings for ortho template.
  • Configure the default settings for BOM tables for displaying on the Ortho Drawings.
  • Generate the Orthographic views from the model itself.
  • Create Ortho views to an existing view.
  • Annotate and dimension the ortho views.

With the AutoCAD Plant 3D Spec Editor, you can create and modify spec files using industry standard parts catalogs.

Launching Spec Editor

Like I said before, three icons will be created when AutoCAD Plant 3D is installed. Clicking the AutoCAD Plant 3D Spec Editor icon to open.

The welcome screen appears, which has three sections.

In Spec section, you can create, modify spec sheets, and open spec sheet using open button or the recent spec list.

In Catalog section, you can modify and open catalog file, to open the catalog use open button or the recent catalog files.

In Resources section, use help to know more about spec editor.

AutoCAD Exchange to access tools related to spec editor.

And the last tab to open the spec editor sample files.

If you don’t need to display this dialog again, check Do not show me this again.

Click X icon on the upper right to close the window.

Open Spec

AutoCAD Plant 3D provides ability to Create a spec file from an existing one.

Go up here to the File menu, click Open Spec.

In Open dialog box, you’re going to have a destination folder that you’re going to be able to select the spec file.

Content folder created as AutoCAD Plant 3D is installed with name “AutoCAD Plant 3D 2017 Content”. The folder contains specs and catalogs where can be used in your project, or create new specs using them.

Add Part to Spec

You can add parts from the Catalog to the Spec Sheet.

You can assign preferences to parts when multiple parts of the same type or size are available in a spec.

Open Spec CS150, and ASME Pipes and Fittings catalog.

Apply filters in Catalog pane to locate the desired part.

Part Use Priority

If you have more than one part of the same size, overlapping sizes will be happened, that’s why you should set part use priority.

Edit Valve Operators

When you place a valve in 3D Model, operator is added.

In Spec Editor, you have the ability to assign default operators for valves, copy parametric operator assignments from one valve to another, and copy assignments from one spec to a different spec as well.

Create Spec

Sometimes, we need to create a custom spec for a specific project.

In spec editor, you can create a custom spec from an existing spec or catalog.

Fixed Pipe Length

In spec editor, you can set an automatic length for pipe section to be placed in a project, without needing to specify the length every time.

Open the desired spec, select the pipe section in spec sheet.

Click edit parts.

Catalog Builder

If a component is not available in a default Plant 3D catalog, you can add your own piping components. A component must be in a catalog before it can be added to a spec. In Catalog Builder, You can create new catalog files or add content to existing one.
